The new 1994 revision of the IS0 9000 International Quality Standard was recently released by the International Organization for Standardization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. All companies currently registered, and those seeking registration, will be required to comply with the new Standard by July of 1995. This paper specifically discusses the revisions to the five core IS0 9000 series Standards: 9000, 9001, 9002, 9003, and 9004. While the revisions have not greatly altered the basic structure or approach of the 1987 version, companies will find the Standard more user friendly. The discussion emphasizes the changes that impact the majority of companies: Scope, Management Responsibility, Quality Planning, Contract Review, Design Review and Validation, and the need for more documentation. Other revisions are briefly outlined. A strategy for implementing the changes is also proposed. A six step process ensures success: read and understand the requirements of the Standard, gain management commitment, perform a gap analysis, plan, assign priorities and responsibilities, and implement. Particular emphasis is placed on senior management understanding and commitment to the process. And, consistent with good management practice, the need to recognize employees for their contribution and involvement in project success is also discussed.
