Fuzzy Applied Control Technology Approach to Multi-Fuel Boiler Performance, 1996 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

The West Tacoma mill has a multi-fuel boiler which generates up to 180,000 lbs per hour of saturated steam at 150 psig. The boiler performance is critical to meet steam demand for the mill with continuous compliance under the Clean Air Act environmental regulations. The paper discusses the use of the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach to determine the key operating variables impacting the performance of the boiler. The results of the study allowed us to work with environmental agencies to modify the limits on these key control variables, thus improving operational flexibility of the boiler. The increase in the operational flexibility presented an opportunity to use Fuzzy Applied Control Technology (FACT) or Fuzzy Logic to optimize the key variables of the boiler operation and enhance environmental performance. The paper reviews the Fuzzy logic implementation approach and its expected impact on the performance of the boiler.
