Use of Programmable Logic Controllers in Paper Mill Load Shed Systems, 1996 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Programmable Logic Controllers can significantly improve the reliability of Paper Mill electrical systems. By rapidly and intelligently removing excess electrical load in response to the loss of a power source an automated load shed system can provide two main benefits. First, it can minimize or eliminate down tune and lost production due to electrical power interruption. Second, it can expedite the restoration of the power system after the load shed event has occurred. This paper will compare an automated system with a commonly used underfrequency load shed scheme and discuss some of the lessons learned in implementing these systems.
