Design Guidelines for CEM and PEM (Continuous Emissions Monitors and Predictive Emissions Monitors) Sytems, 1997 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings
CEMS (Continuous Emissions Monitoring System) traditionally consist of multiple component sub-systems installed in hostile environments to measure and deliver timely information for demonstration of environmental compliance. Over the past several years, much experience has been gained on CEMS designs.
In recent years, more emphasis has been placed on the use of PEMS (Predictive Emissions Monitoring System) as an alternative to CEMS. PEMS have the same level of accuracy as CEMS for many applications. PEMS are model based, therefore having no direct contact with the hostile stack environments. When sensor validation systems are implemented, as required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines, with PEMS, the maintenance requirements of these systems are greatly reduced.
Design guidelines and new technologies for CEMS and PEMS are presented in this paper.
