Mill Experience in Testing and Upgrading Control Valves, 1997 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings
The Pine Hill mill is a producer of linerboard and corrugating medium. The fiber is supplied by two continuous digesters and two OCC recycle plants. The mill has undertaken a program to continually improve quality by reducing weight and moisture variation. A significant part of this program is to monitor the performance of key control valves throughout the mill. Certain valves have been targeted for upgrade or replacement along with installation of new “smart” digital positioners.
With the new positioners, a predictive maintenance effort is being used to document valve performance changes over time. This is being used to schedule maintenance for the valves before quality and operating efficiency are compromised. The result of the program has been lower weight and moisture variability as well as savings in operating efficiencies, such as reduced venting of steam in the dryer sections.
