The performance of CD control systems is discussed in terms of spatial and dynamic bandwidths. By relating these bandwidths to the specification of the required quality of the finished sheet and typical disturbances that enter the process, specifications are developed for the design of the actuators, the sensing system and the control algorithm. It is shown that the current generation of CD control systems is not suitable for controlling variations over small areas of sheet, but a system which regulates over much smaller areas could be developed using recent developments in sensors and CD control algorithms.
