Exploiting Non-Control Functions in Field Devices with Fieldbus, 1998 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Fieldbus, the technology of the Fieldbus Foundation, is an open specification for sensors, actuators, analyzers, and the like. It includes definitions that permit control to be resident in field devices. But more than that, it enables many non-control functions to be resident in intelligent devices because access to that information is now standardized. This paper will focus on those non-control functions—including the diagnostic, process operation, and maintenance functions—that Fieldbus enables to be resident in field and other remotely located devices.
