Static Frequency Converter Couples US Paper Mill's 25-HZ and 60-HZ Electricity Grids, 1998 Process Control, Electrical and Information Conference Proceedings

Before 60 Hz was adopted as the standard frequency for electrical distribution in the USA, power companies across the nation had traditionally operated with a frequency of their own choosing. In Pennsylvania, for example, 25 Hz was widely used, and even today there are a large number of power networks still operated as 25-Hz “islands”. Only recently, as modern static frequency converters have come onto the market, has it become possible to exchange energy between these networks and the 60-Hz grid, without maintenance intensive and less efficient motor generator sets.
