Analysis of Kappa Variability in a Kamyr Digester and Oxygen Reactor, 1998 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

Complex processes with significant time delays are difficult to optimize and control because of the multitude of variables that can affect the final product. Examples of such processes in the pulp mill are continuous pulping and oxygen delignification. Accurate models can facilitate the control and optimization of these processes. In this paper, the development and application of statistical models for a Kamyr digester and oxygen delignification reactor are discussed. Statistical modeling is based on a multivariate technique called factor analysis. Modeling results show that about half of the variability seen in kappa for both the digester and oxygen reactor can be explained by inadequate control of process variables. The models also show which process variables should be better controlled to improve digester and O2 reactor performance.
