Simulation of Process Dynamics in Paper Machine Optimization Surveys, 1998 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

The objectives of Paper Machine optimization surveys are to improve product quality and process efficiency. Dynamic process simulation technology has matured and now represents an affordable and effective method for identifying sources of product variability and testing solutions during these surveys. A first principles process model coupled with advanced computing power and software provides the controls engineer with a method of exploring solutions to ambiguous process problems without committing capital. The role of dynamic simulation in solving process variability problems of increasing complexity is discussed. Two factual case studies from paper machine optimization surveys are presented to demonstrate the application of dynamic simulation.
