CD Response Detection for Control, 1998 Process Control, Electrical & Info. Conference Proceedings

This paper presents a highly automated procedure of CD response model detection for the cross machine direction paper quality control. The CD response model consists of three parts: actuator to measurement mapping, single actuator response shape, and process dynamics. The model identification sequence includes actuator excitation (bump), response profile collection, validation, and processing, model parameter calculation, mapping compensation, and control tuning. The implementation on the DCS platform where the CD controls are running allows the user to invoke the above steps by the push of a START_TEST button. The model identification method, its implementation in industrial computers, and application results are discussed.
