For years there have been various automatic features for winders, such as, the set change process, and automatic positioning slitters. But numerous manual tasks were still required for threading and order setup. The operator was still required to initiate automated sequences.

Advancements in automation hardware and control software for all areas of the winding process have resulted in a process called “continuous winding.” The winder will continue to operate automatically, set after set, reel after reel, as long as reels are available and the discharge area is clear, provided process checks are met and safety devices are not actuated.

Manual tasks are substantially reduced thereby increasing the safety potential and reducing manpower or allowing one crew to operate two winders efficiently and safely. A new level of self diagnostics assure minimum downtime. The winder performs to its maximum potential of roll quality and capacity. Winder operational requirements have changed. Now, winder automation has been integrated as a total system utilizing the best of today’s mechanical and control automation.
