Adhesion of Coatings to Aluminum Foil - A Sticky Issue, 2002 PLACE Conference Proceedings

Aluminium foil is an indispensable part of high-performance barrier packaging. Traditional converting steps, such as lacquering or 2-component-adhesive laminating, are being replaced more and more by extrusion coating or extrusion lamination.
This presentation describes the influence of the composition and chemistry of the foil’s surface on these processes.
The key factors for achieving good and durable adhesion as well as wettability and bond formation will be explained in detail. The limits of adhesion performance of coatings to foil will also be discussed.
