A New Enhanced Polyethylene for Extrusion Coating and Laminating, 2002 PLACE Conference Proceedings

Metallocene polyethylenes are well known for providing superior toughness, excellent heat sealing, and better clarity when compared to conventional polyethylenes. Their unique attributes have been employed for almost a decade in the manufacture of many different high-performance blown and cast films for numerous end-use applications. A new enhanced polyethylene, created with metallocene-catalyst technology, has been developed for extrusion coating and laminating applications. It offers high hot tack strength and low heat seal initiation temperatures along with good puncture and tear resistance. This new resin is tougher than conventional LDPE and LLDPE resins, and recent extrusion coating studies have shown that this polymer provides attributes similar to those of plastomers. For the best coating performance, blends of this new polyethylene with small amounts of LDPE should be employed.
