Heat Seal Characteristics of Cyclic-Olefin Copolymer/Polyethylene Blends, 2002 PLACE Conference Proceedings

In flexible packaging, COCs are most often used in blends with polyethylene and as a discrete layer in multilayer films. When blended with polyethylene, COC dramatically improves modulus and stiffness. It can also maintain or lower haze, and increase ultimate seal strength and hot-tack strength in some polyethylenes. The effect of COC addition on heat seal characteristics varies with the type of polyethylene (LDPE, LLDPE, and Plastomer). Additionally, higher levels of COC in an exterior blend layer are shown to provide “seal-through” capability allowing a coextruded film to function in applications that often require a laminated film.
