Fluorescence - Based Sensor "Labels" for Non-Invasive Oxygen Monitoring in Packaging, 2002 PLACE Conference Proceedings

A fluorescent oxygen sensor has been developed that can be applied to an adhesive label for attachment to the inside or outside of food and beverage packaging. The oxygen sensor film is then analyzed with a handheld spectrometer to assist in shelf-life determination and assessment of packaging integrity. There are many complicating issues for implementing such a sensor directly into packaging. These include the development of the sensor films and their lotto- lot reproducibility, the spectrometer configuration for optimum sensitivity, and a calibration algorithm and procedure for quantitative oxygen analysis. These issues will be described in detail and their solutions discussed.
