On-Line Gauging for Coating and Laminating, 2002 PLACE Conference Proceedings
The demand for high quality multi-layer films and coated products with increased functionality continues to
rise. The layers are becoming thinner with more complex and costly structures, production runs are shorter
and line speeds are increased to improve efficiency. Producers are challenged to meet this demand, often
times, without the ability to raise prices. Remaining competitive requires an efficient process able to run
quality product from the start to finish of a run.
These tasks can not be accomplished with periodic lab sampling, since a defect caught in the lab may be
hours old! Add the requirements for proof of compliance (SPC/SQC data) and the ability to conduct real time
process analysis for improvements or troubleshooting and on-line gauging is a tool in this effort.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the benefits and economics of utilizing on-line gauging in a
film/coating process. In addition we will discuss the applicable gauging sensor technologies and how they are
implemented to provide the measurement data and process control capability.
