Easy-Opening Packaging Technology: A Technical Perspective from Basell Polyolefins, 2004 PLACE Conference
Today’s consumer is increasingly demanding the convenience of user-friendly easy-opening
packaging for which more and more filmpackaging are turning to Basell Polyolefins’ materials.
This paper will outline Basell’s products used by customers in easy opening packaging, and
the technical principles behind the achievement of the easy-opening effect, by discussing
structure-morphology-property relationships based on our most recent laboratory results.
By means of these established relationships, the factors influencing the easy-opening
performance will be outlined. Today this easy-opening technology is based on a cohesive
failure mechanism delivering unique characteristics, which are sometimes not fully exploited.
Finally, well known EVA-based seal peel systems will be reviewed in respect of the basic
parameters which control the easy-opening effect; namely the adhesion of the dispersed
phase towards the matrix with reference to the peel quality obtained at the interface.
