Experiences in the Piloting and Succesful Implementationof BS7759 and EMAS, 1996 Plastic Laminates Symposium Proceedings

The paper outlines the main business activities of Ciba Clayton in relation to environmental issues. The background to the British Standard BS7750, its piloting in the UK and implementation at Clayton is detailed, together with a unique trial assessment involving several certification bodies, and subsequent successful certification and registration to EMAS. Major challenges involved in implementing BS7750 included the formulation of a policy, site objectives and a management programme. Their interrelation leading to demonstrable proof of continuous improvement is illustrated. The importance of utilizing existing systems, e.g. IS09000 in operational control, internal auditing and review is also indicated. The unique requirement of a register of significant environment effects required the development of a methodology capable of embracing both direct and indirect effects which could be managed within the framework of normal site activities. Finally, the paper discusses the broad requirements of a successful business and the role of management systems. Everyday benefits already derived from implementing BS7750 are illustrated. That BS7750 can clearly provide a sound base for the auditable control and management of everyday activities as well as a pathway towards a vision for the future is illutstrated.
