Dual Stage Impregnating Process with Gravure-Roll Coater, 1996 Plastic Laminates Symposium Proceedings
Dual-stage impregnation makes economic sense. The Gravure-Roll coating process was developed specifically for the purpose of saturating decorative and technical papers with a urea-formaldehyde based resin and to apply a melamine-formaldehyde based coating. The Gravure-Roll-Coater applies this asymmetricaI coating as the second stage in the process. Gravure Roll screen size and patterns as well as speed and rotational direction affect the resulting coating weight and surface quality. The presentation will describe the operating conditions and parameters affecting the coating weight as well as it’s range limitations. Various pre-conditions have to be met to make the unit operable. Mechanical - and process - related variables influence product quality and maximum achievable processing speed.
