New Approach to Laboratory Automation, 1996 Plastic Laminates Symposium Proceedings

The design of a system for increasing the efficiency of a paper testing laboratory is discussed. Starting with needs for both increased product testing and a switch to having all testing performed directly by the papermakers, a computer interface system was designed and implemented. The system electronically initiates the test, coordinates autofeed testing instruments, sends the data to the a host computer and produces reports and graphs for the operators. For a series of tests for our Unisat ® product line, we have reduced 25 minutes of manual testing in two minutes of operator time and six minutes of clock time.
