Doing Business in China: Practicalities of Establishing Joint Ventures, 1997 Asian Laminates Symposium Proceedings
This paper will discuss the two main forms of investment entities available to foreign investors in China: the equity joint venture and the cooperative or contractual joint venture. The principal characteristics and differences between these two types of joint venture entities will be discussed as well as some of the considerations that a foreign investor should bear in mind when negotiating a joint venture in China. Two relatively new forms of foreign investment vehicles, foreign invested joint stock companies and foreign invested investment companies, will also be discussed briefly. Finally, a short description of the process for obtaining approvals for and establishing a joint venture in China will be discussed. It should be noted that a relatively new type of investment vehicle, the wholly owned foreign enterprise or WOFE”, remains an alternative of enterprise (though invested ) investment enterprise.
