The term laminate can cover a wide array of products. This tutorial will discuss three main types of laminate used in the surfacing industry; decorative foils, low pressure laminate (LPL) and high pressure laminate (HPL). The major raw materials used in each process will be explained. The manufacturing process for each type of laminate will be discussed, common applications will be offered and general performance differences presented. This paper is intended to provide an overview of the industry to newcomers. In-depth details such as resin chemistry, paper design and process conditions will not be discussed.
