Relationship Between Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin Chemistry and Paper Saturation, 1998 Plastic Laminates Symposium Proceedings

The Lucas-Washburn equation is presented as a description of the capillary penetration process by liquids in terms of the physical properties of cylinder radius, liquid surface tension, contact angle, and viscosity.

This paper considers how fundamental formulation variables of PF resins affect these physical properties that in turn control the paper saturation process. The concept of relative penetrating power of a resin is introduced as a characteristic resin property. It can be calculated using a derivation of the Lucas-Washburn equation from measurable physical properties.
