Performance Testing of High Pressure Decorative Paper Laminates, 1998 Plastic Laminates Symposium Proceedings

High pressure decorative paper laminates (HPDL) are used as decorative surfacing on counters, cabinetry, furniture, wall paneling, and flooring. The ANSI approved NEMA LD3 (1995) standard tests evaluate initial appearance of the HPDL sheets, resistance to change in appearance caused by typical use, and dimensional change due to changes in humidity. Scratch resistance is a major concern of consumers, yet one of the more difficult properties to quantify since scratch perception is dependent on color and texture of the surface as well as the size of the scratch. Attempts to quantify this dependency are presented.
