William W. Maslanka--Wet strength additives are an important ingredient in the overall manufacture of various paper products. The attribute of wet strength especially in products like paper towels is one that is taken for granted by the average consumer - its got to be there. In this portion of this course, the various types of resins used to impart wet strength will be discussed. Focus will be placed on chemistry, optimum use conditions, those variables in the papermaking system that influence performance and finally some examples to in-mill problems associated with wet strength resin use.
