Development of Mathematical Models for Predicting Sizing, Strength, and Opacity on the Miami University Pilot Paper Machine, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

M. Gyaneshwar, Hart, D., and Scott, W.E.--Experimentation with pilot paper machines often requires the execution of multiple runs under a variety of conditions in a short period of time. In these instances, it is advantageous if one can get "on grade" rapidly and with a minimum number of trials. This project was aimed at the development of a predictive mathematical model that would inform the machine manager where to set certain process and raw material variables in order to achieve a desired set of opacity, tensile strength, Hercules Size Test and basis weight values. The procedures employed to develop and test the model will be described. The model so developed has the capability of predicting the machine and raw material settings needed to achieve a desired set of properties, or to predict the properties that will be produced by a given set of machine and raw material conditions.
