Effect of Refining on Paper Formation, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Pål Stoere, Mousa Nazhad, Richard Kerekes--The effect of refining on paper formation has been investigated by a three step procedure consisting of refining pulps at differing energies and intensities, forming handsheets at headbox consistency, and measuring sheet formation by video beta radiography. Refining intensity was characterized by a Specific Intensity determined from the C-Factor. After refining, formation of whole pulps was significantly improved when handsheets were made at headbox consistency, but was little changed for handsheets formed at standard conditions. This was attributed to fibre shortening caused by refining and the strong effect of fibre length on fibre flocculation at headbox consistency. For refined pulp fractions of equal length, PFI refining slightly improved or had no effect on formation. In contrast, refining in an Escher Wyss laboratory refiner significantly worsened formation.
