Borax Enhanced Starch Improves Paper Properties, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

A. Z. Ashamed Shoeb, Zaki Yusu, Dewei Qi--A literature search reveals that there is little information about the influence of the addition of borax to starches on the mechanical properties of paper. The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of addition of borax to starches on the mechanical strength properties and to explore a possible method to increase bonding strength between cellulosic fibers by mixing borax with cationic starches. Paper is either immersed in the starches mixed with borax. After drying, the paper is tested for mechanical properties. The experimental results show that borax significantly increases the tensile strength and tensile energy absorption of paper when the paper is treated with borax-cationic starch pastes. It is concluded that the addition of borax/borate to starches significantly enhances the bonding ability of starches and the mechanical properties of paper.
