Synthesis of New Precipitated Silica for High Oil Absorbency, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Masashi Matsuda, Osamu Kitao--In order to improve opacity after printing, which is one of the most important quality for newsprint paper, suppressing penetration of ink into paper is one of the very useful methods. For that purpose, a new filler with high ink absorbency have been required. Our newly developed precipitated silica (named MG-silica), which was synthesized by adding refined magnesium hydroxide into conventional precipitated silica (silica) synthesis process and then dissolve magnesium hydroxide after silica was precipitated, have higher oil absorbency (+100~200mL/100g filler) than conventional one. Furthermore, MG-silica have a more narrow particle size distribution than conventional one. Handsheets prepared with MG-silica that synthesized by this method show higher opacity after printing than that of conventional silica. In addition, the first pass retention of the stock added MG-silica is also higher.
