Filler Flocculation Technology - Increasing Sheet Filter Content Without Loss in Strength or Runnability Parameters, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

S. Mabee, R. Harvey--The preflocculation of filler materials via Grain Processing Corporation’s patented filler flocculation technology can provide a significant increase in sheet filler content without loss in strength, optical, or runnability parameters. This ability to increase filler content can generate not only significant cost savings through fiber replacement, but increased optical properties including opacity and brightness. Improved formation, above and beyond that achieved using new micropolymer retention chemicals, can yield increased product quality and improved drainage/runnability. Increased retention and a reduced need for process chemicals may provide a cleaner system which, in turn, can result in increased machine efficiency (faster speeds, reduced breaks). Reduced chemical use and waste treatment costs can also create significant mill savings. A six-week trial utilizing this preflocculation system was conducted on a 600-ton-per-day, twin-wire paper machine producing reprographic and bond papers. The objective of this paper is to present the filler flocculation technology in detail and summarize the advantages which may be provided through use of the process on a commercial basis.
