New Amphoteric Starch Technology for Improved Paper Quality and Optimal Wet-End Performance, 2001 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Lee Nester, Walter Maliczyszyn--The next generation in amphoteric wet-end starch technology has been introduced. These starches contain positively and negatively charged substituent groups, innovatively configured in the manufacturing process, to achieve a desired charge balance. This new manufacturing process insures an effective charge distribution on the starch molecule, allowing for a more controlled/stabilized wet-end chemistry in machine systems employing this technology. With this enhanced charge distribution, improved performance in dry strength development, drainage and fines/filler retention have been achieved in a wide range of furnishes. As dry strength additives, these starches continue to provide incremental strength improvement at addition rates where current cationic or amphoteric starches show diminishing or negative effects.
