Monitoring Flocculation of Newsprint in the Laboratory and on a Paper Machine, 2001 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
In 1999, we reported on the use of FBRM, Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement, in evaluating the performance of microparticle containing retention and drainage programs in the laboratory and on pilot paper machines [23]. Since that time, this technique has been applied to production paper machines during evaluations of various retention and drainage programs. This paper provides a summary of the use of FBRM during laboratory evaluations of a new flocculant for use in the production of newsprint. We demonstrate the utility of FBRM in the laboratory and relate this to Dynamic Drainage Jar results. This technique is then applied during a commercial paper machine trial to monitor the headbox stock. The results demonstrate the utility of FBRM as a predictive tool both in the laboratory and in production.
