Furnish Compatibility and Efficacy of Oxidizing Slimicides, 2001 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The suitability of papermachine microbiological control programs, both non-oxidizing and oxidizing, are established, to a large extent, by the degree of compatibility of the microbiocide with the practiced wet end chemistry and furnish composition. Free halogen based oxidizing slimicides, one of the traditional alternatives for papermachine applications, are highly reactive with furnish compositions. This incompatibility greatly limits their suitability for modern high performance applications.
Hydantoin stabilized oxidants (HSOs) are a new class of US FDA approved slimicides for use in the production of food contact papers. The compatibility and efficacy of hydantoin stabilized oxidants with standard papermaking furnish components was determined and compared to that of the corresponding free halogen alternative, hypobromous acid (HOBr). Hydantoin stabilization was found to provide dramatically increased compatibility with standard optical brighteners, wet and dry strength resins, retention aids and size.
Enhanced slimicidal efficacy was also observed for the hydantoin stabilized system. When combined with the enhanced compatibility of these materials, favorable, efficacy:interaction ratios were demonstrated for the hydantoin stabilized system. In conclusion, hydantoin stabilized oxidants provide enhanced compatibility and slimicidal efficacy over their free oxidant analogs, providing a broad range of applicability for this new class of oxidant.
