Starch-Related Operational Problems at the Size Press, 2001 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
A number of operational problems related to the use of starch at the size press are discussed within the framework of a problem solving process model. Difficulties can arise in starch cooking, in-mill conversion or viscosity modification, nip rejection, starch instability due to retrogradation and amylose crystallization, loss of control of starch penetration or holdout due to viscosity variations, discoloration, filter plugging, foaming, microbiological growth, and buildup of deposits on rolls, metering devices, or dryer cans. A small, inexpensive toolkit can be assembled and used, along with some troubleshooting procedures, to understand, diagnose, and begin solving these problems.
