Deformation of Fiber Flocs in Refining, 2001 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Stock preparation refining plays a very important role in the papermaking process. For many, if not most paper grades, it is the largest single factor determining finished product quality. In spite of its critical role, the exact nature of the process is not clearly understood. Specific energy input and specific edge load, the principal tools used for controlling the refining result, are very indirect indications of the number and magnitude of useful plastic strains to which the fibers have been subjected.
A process model is proposed that may be used to describe the important parameters that control the refining "impact" event. Future pilot plant and mill refining tests will be used to demonstrate its application.
