Wet-Web Strength Incrase by Chitosan, 1990 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
M. Laleg, I. I. Pikulik--Chitosan, an aminopolysaccharide obtained by hydrolysis of shellfish wastes, was evaluated as a wet-end additive in a laboratory study con-ducted with bleached kraft. Chitosan was found to increase the strength of never-dried wet webs, dry paper and rewetted paper. The strengthening effect of chitosan depends on the acidity of the stock. The highest freeness was measured for pulp treated with chitosan at pH 7.5, while the highest wet-web strength and dry paper strength were measured for handsheets made of pulp treated with chitosan at pH 10.
