Press Section Optimization - Monitoring of Wet Press Felts, 1990 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

John Nishimuta--This paper presents the wet press optimization and felt monitoring programs at Federal Paperboard’s Augusta, GA, mill. Objective of the optimization program was to increase machine uptime and improve sheet quality by eliminating press section related problems. The objectives were achieved and additional cost reductions were realized by increasing felt life, identification of press section maintenance needs, and reduction of felt chemical costs. The approach was comprehensive in the initial stages utilizing suppliers as well as development of mill evaluation procedures. Performance of equipment, felts, and felt cleaning systems were evaluated. The felt monitoring program derived from the optimization process requires minimal effort and technical skills.
