Aluminum Compounds as Cationic Donors in Alkaline Papermaking Systems, 1990 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Ralph M. Trksak--Aluminum salts have proven themselves to be beneficial additives in alkaline papermaking systems, improving the performance of synthetic sizes, as well as amphoteric starch retention and drainage aids. These aluminum-based materials are functional in alkaline systems because they possess a net cationic charge in this environment. This cationic charge was documented by a net absorption of anionic polymer or dye and by changes induced in the electrophoretic mobilities of alkaline pulp fines and calcium carbonate fillers. However, the intensity of this charge, as well as its positive effect on an amphoteric starch’s performance, decreases with the aluminum salt’s residence time in the given alkaline system.
