Effects of Fines on Offset Newsprint Linting, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The effects of pulp fine fraction of the standard newsprint stock upon the linting propensity in offset printing was determined both in laboratory experiments and in a Bel-Baie-2 papermachine wet-end chemistry trials in a mill. The laboratory linting tests correlated well with printing room evaluation. The amount of fines on the sheet surface was measured with the image analysis technology. We obtained results that as much as fines fraction should be hold on the paper surface, with the effective use of wet end chemicals for the purpose of reducing the linting problem of offset newsprint.
