Effects of Recycled Fibers on Wet Strength, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The increasing use of recycled fibers presents challenges to the papermaker regarding paper strength requirements, and also to the wet strength resin supplier. Secondary fiber sources such as recycled newsprint, hard whites, coated papers and OCC bring shorter fibers and various fillers and contaminants to the stock system. Gaining an understanding of these new chemical and physical influences on a resin’s performance will aid in optimizing its use in an increasingly complex papermaking system.
