Increased research and development efforts in repulping and deinking technology have come as a result of the increase in recycling. As an example of work being done with secondary fiber, a repulping and deinking study was completed on yellow pages directory.
The effect of chemical repulping and deinking aids was studied. Yellow pages directory was repulped and deinked using various commercial products. The pulp was deinked by washing and floating prior to a peroxide brightening step.
Results include:
1. Significant brightness gains (5-9 points) using a dispersant versus no dispessant after the washing, floating and peroxide brightening steps.
2. Effective clarification of the process water at 30 ppm using various clarification aids with 97-99% efficiency.
3. Fiber losses of 15-30% after washing and flotation steps.
