Fine Paper Properties When Using Deinked Recycled Fiber in an Alkaline System and The Effects of Wet End Starch, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The effects on paper properties of replacing virgin fiber with deinked recycled fiber in an alkaline system have been investigated. In addition, the contribution of wet end starch to these systems was studied. We found that First Pass Retention, Brightness, Mullen Burst and Scott Internal Bond are affected negatively as the percentage ofrecycled fiber is increased. However, recycled fibers are beneficial for opacity and internal sizing.

When using recycle pulp, high amounts of anionic material in the recycle pulp

were found to contribute to the degradation of paper properties. Addition of cationic starch to the wet end improves some of the degradation in First Pass Retention, Mullen Burst and Scott Bond. Starch chemistry and dosages were also modified to optimize paper properties.
