On-Line Surface Treatment for Value Added Papers, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The move towards specification - led paper grades has opened up new market opportunities for surface treatment. Good high speed surface sizing techniques already exist, but on-machine impregnation methods need to be improved. The chemistries developed for surface coatings offer opportunities for surface chemistry innovation in fine papers. For casemaking grades the use of lignins and other pulping residues as saturants can improve moist compressive strength. The development of surface treatment techniques must be dictated by the stresses imposed on the sheet in the end use cycle. The understanding of these effects requires more sophisticated methods of sheet analysis to relate paper structure to function.
