New Polymers for Alkaline Papermaking: Improved Paper Surfaces Through Size Press Applications, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

This paper discusses the performance of a new styrene/acrylic class of surface size which represents an advance in the technology of synthetic polymeric resin sizes for size press application. This new surface size polymer has been specifically designed to give improved sizing as well as a better printing surface in an alkaline sheet. This chemistry not only provides excellent ink holdout but positively influences many of the paper properties which are critical to improved paper sheet printability. The key characterisitcs of this new surface size which are outlined in the paper are: increased ink penetration time, contact angle and Bristow wheel performance. Additional indirect benefits include reduced internal size use and improved printability.
