Effect of Aluminum on the Permanence of Alkaline Papers, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

When mills first began to convert from acid to alkaline paper making, alum use in the mill was eliminated. More recently, paper makers have begun to use alum to improve sizing and retention. Concerns have now arisen whether the presence of aluminum in the sheet affects paper permanence. In this paper, literature covering the effects of aluminum on the permanence of alkaline paper will be discussed. This data will be discussed in the context of available information on the impact of acidity and alkalinity on paper permanence as well as important considerations regarding accelerated aging of paper.
