Conversion from Acid to Alkaline with a Film Transfer Size Press, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The successful conversion at Willamette’s 525 ton/day Fine Paper machine in Hawesville, Kentucky from acidic to alkaline conditions was enhanced with a film transfer size press, installed a year prior. The pre-conversion efficiencies were quickly achieved due to improved size press runnability and the fact that the size press is more "forgiving" than conventional pond size presses.
Pre-conversion trials, planning, considerable technical support from suppliers along with quick and reliable feedback from "in-house" converters optimized First Quality production, with very little paper rejected for traditional problems such as "slip", billowing, low stiffness and dropping folds.
Paper grades successfully produced and qualified were 34# Carbonless Basestock, 15# to 20# Forms Bond, 15# Tablet, and 20# Willcopy (Xerographic). Two production records have been achieved without speed increases, since the conversion.
