Typical commercially available polyaminoamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) wet strength resins contain up to 14% low molecular weight organic chloride contaminants, based on GC and NMR analyses. The total organic chloride (TOCl) consists of unreacted epichlorohydrin, and the by-products dichloropropanol and chloropropanediol formed during resin synthesis. These TOCl components are distributed throughout the water, paper solids, and atmosphere of papermaking systems in substantial quantities under commonly used PAE dosage conditions. Optimizing the resin production process provides low TOCl PAE resins which maintain the high level of wet strength performance while reducing the TOCl contaminants by more than two orders of magnitude.
