Use of Alum to Improve ASA Sizing Efficiency in Alkaline Paper, 1991 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The efficiency of ASA emulsions in cationic starch for sizing alkaline paper is significantly increased by the addition of a small amount of alum. This effect holds with all types of cationic and amphoteric starches evaluated. Dramatic sizing improvements were obtained by late addition of alum to ASA-treated alkaline stock which had been mixing for an extended period of time. The alum acts as a cationic donor provided its contact time with alkaline stock is kept short. Other aluminum compounds such as aluminum chloride, poly aluminum chloride and poly aluminum silicate-sulfate offered no sizing performance advantages over papermakers alum.
