My TAPPI Story: Leslie Petrie
A new type of chemically reactive cationic starch was evaluated. In addition to cationic amino groups, this starch contains aldehyde substituents which can form hemiacetal bonds with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose. The starch substantially increased the strength of never-dried wet-webs, and also the dry and wet strength of handsheets made of bleached kraft pulp furnishes. Rosin, alum, filler and polyacrylamide did not interfere with the strengthening effect of cationic aldehyde starch.
